Overview

The ASEAN Culture House had their third contest entitled 2019 ACH Photo&Video Contest: ASEAN in Korea, Korea in ASEAN that happened during Jan. 28 to March 10, 2019. This was a video entry for that contest.

Problem statement
The main goal of this is to showcase the charms of ASEAN/Korea that the person has experienced. The time limit of the video is only 1 minute.

Role & audience
I am the main videographer for this project. The audience are the judges of the contest, and those who will be viewing the exhibit.

Process
Video concept & editing
For my video piece in this contest, I felt the need to show the how the current relationship of my country, the Philippines, is with South Korea through the most vibrant way possible: the use of colors. I focused on the three primary colors, red, blue, and yellow, because of how these three make up all the other colors that we see. Additionally, a bonus meaning, the three colors are commonly significant in both traditions.

Given this concept, I was then able to apply how the Korean culture has greatly impacted our own by adding more shades of these colors into what we experience, making it livelier and more beautiful. But, our own culture still shines through beside that of the Korean nation. We also see through these colors the likeness we have as nations, that despite our differences, there is still the connection seen in the two cultures through the spectrum that we both see in our daily lives. The concept is shown through the footage I chose in the video as well as the side by side editing layout style. I filmed the Korean influences here in the Philippines like the concerts, products, food, etc. as well as our own culture such as the tricycle, jeep, etc. I also gathered my videos from my past Korea trips to put it in parallel with the videos. I ended the video with a montage of the seamless transition between things found in both countries with the same colors.

Korea-Philippines parallels in colors and objects

Final video & description
Blue, yellow, and red. Everyone knows these as the primary sources of any color combination that we see in our everyday lives. The three colors bring out the brightness, calmness, and most importantly the beauty of life’s varied shades and hues. I focused on these colors and made them the central theme of the video. Featuring the wondrous streets and sceneries of both South Korea and the Philippines, the video is an observation of how both nations incorporate blues, yellows, and reds into their cultures. It is through these that we can see how, despite the existence of uniqueness, there is a strong connection in their similarities. Unity arises not only through the vibrant primary colors but also the parallelisms of both countries, wherein the Korean influence is now heavily integrated in the lives of Filipinos. Blue, yellow and red also signify the countries’ political identities, appearing in the Philippine flag and Korea’s tricolored 태극기 (taegeukgi).

Results and lessons learned
I was honored with the prize of ACH Director-General Prize worth 500,000 KRW for the video category. The awarded photos and videos, including mine entitled “THREE COLORS", was displayed at the Special Exhibition Gallery of the ASEAN Culture House in Busan from April 5 to June 2, 2019 as part of the Special Exhibition called the “ASEAN Gaze.”

Project takeaways
It was a random decision I made to try and join this contest. I just saw the poster shared by the Korean Studies department of Ateneo, and I decided to try it out. The decision turned out to be well as I was one of the winners and my photos was shared by the Ateneo’s Korean Studies Program, Ateneo de Manila University’s official Facebook and Twitter, and featured in the Loyola School’s Bulletin paper. Sometimes you just have to try something out, and you will be rewarded unexpectedly. Totally grateful to have experienced winning a region-wide contest!
